Literature Text

Step off the bus
Walk past the black and white Mountain Media bench
Pass cookie-cutout apartment buildings and trees displaying red berries

Walk through crunchy leaves that
Tumble up the sidewalk, racing clothed feet
Over puddles and through intersections
Landing gently on green grass lawns

Sneeze, a storm is coming
Zip up the gray jacket with rosy fingers
On the way to the Tea Master's cabin
Hiding red sparkly fabric

Look up at the green street lamp
Standing sentry outside homes with their own porch lights
Where children play with chalk and hoops in yards
Bouncing balls on the sidewalk

Sidestep a low flying yellow bird
Crane to watch which eve it tucks itself under
Probably where its twiggy nest lays hidden
Chirping babies call from somewhere

Slow over the bridge stretched over a dry wash
Stare at the ripe cat-tail reeds bumping into one another
The wind threatening which each gust to explode every one
Throwing white fluff everywhere

Approach the brown cabin tucked behind a short fence
Avoid the shapely bush trees and waving pink flowers
While cutting a line for the sliding glass door
Hopping not to be late

Step into the tea room
Walk across the squishy reed tatami
kneel before the master, bow, begin
A walk poem for my creative writing class. I was supposed to actually take a walk... but in the interest of getting other homework done I decided to retell a walk I took a year ago for a class, including a few observations of that general area while riding past on the bus headed for school. I can't help but feel I cheated...
