(Demystify, Veronique Meignaud 1993-2011) "Behind every mage is a trail of shattered lies" (15 min writing July 24, 2011)
--------------------------------
Rahl stood on the edge of the mist-ridden abyss. The castle floating in the clouds was abandoned long ago by its people. He raised his hands and began his solemn work. Soon the castle would be just a myth, snippets of memory of something that once was.

Immediately the enchantment surrounding the castle became visible to the mage. The bubble-like appearance didn't fool him, he knew the dangers of the echoes of magic and already took the necessary precautions. If the barrier broke prematurely, the ones he'd wrapped around both his physical and inner self would hold.

Rahl remembered when the flying castle came into being. He knew that mage well back then.

When the war started, they ran from the path of needless destruction and stumbled upon the castle.

The castle-dwellers feared the worst, having no formal military of their own to defend their lands with. At the time, they both knew there was no hope for the people there unless they fled. For that reason, Rahl couldn't believe his ears when the mage promised the kingdom that he could move their city out of harm's way.

The next day, the whole castle was flying high in the sky, out of reach of the armies moving across the plains.

The mage left solemnly; he never told the inhabitants of the dangers in the sky. He promised that they would be safe from the war, but didn't mention that there are no resources above the ground. Behind every mage is a trail of shattered lies.

Over time, Rahl imagined, the people wasted away in their flying prison.

The bubble began to flicker and disperse. Stones tumbled from the crumbling walls, disappearing into the mist, destined for their home once more.

I decided one day that I would spend 15 minutes on short writing prompts based around magic the gathering flavor texts before I launch into working on current large projects.

I do not lay any claim to Magic the gathering or any cards from which I draw the inspiration. The card art featured as the preview is also not mine.

[I am also posting these on a blog called Collected Short Magics: [link] ]
